Moving to the cloud changes how you work, and it also changes how you protect what matters. The good news is you do not have to solve everything at once. A few well chosen controls already cut a large share of the risk early in the journey.
Start with an inventory
You can only protect what you know about. Before any tool, list what runs in the cloud: accounts, projects, services, databases and who has access to each. Environments no one remembers tend to be the most exposed.
Keep that inventory alive. As teams spin up new resources, the map has to keep pace.
Treat identity as the new perimeter
In the cloud, access is the main entry point. Two things make a big difference:
- Least privilege: each person and each service gets only the permissions they need, nothing more.
- Multi-factor authentication (MFA): enable it for all administrative access. It is one of the best controls for the effort it takes.
Avoid long-lived credentials when temporary roles do the job. Keys that never expire are a risk that piles up over time.
Close the exposed settings
Most cloud incidents do not come from sophisticated attacks, but from settings left open: public storage, a port open to the internet, a database with no network restriction. Set aside time to review these points and standardize secure settings as the default.
Turn on logging before you need it
Logs are what let you understand what happened when something goes wrong. Enable activity logging for your main accounts and services and store that data safely. Without visibility, a small problem becomes an invisible one.
Plan for recovery
Backup is not just a copy, it is the ability to restore. Define what needs backup, how often, and test the restore from time to time. A backup that was never tested is an assumption, not a guarantee.
Conclusion
Cloud security is a path of continuous improvement, not a project with an end date. Starting with inventory, identity, settings, logging and recovery already puts a company on solid ground. From there, each cycle matures the controls.
